Joakim Nivre Receives the 2023 ACL Dragomir Radev Distinguished Service Award

We are delighted to award the 2023 ACL Dragomir Radev Distinguished Service Award to Joakim Nivre, Professor of Computational Linguistics at Uppsala University and Senior Researcher at the RISE Research Institute of Sweden. He has served in many different capacities in the ACL leadership and exemplifies the dedication over his over two decades of contribution to computational linguistics. In his official capacities, he has served as the ACL President (2017); ACL General Chair (2010); Secretary of the ACL Special Interest Group for Natural Language Learning (SIGNLL) from 2007 to 2009; Secretary of the European Chapter of the Association for Computational Linguistics (EACL) form 2009 to 2012; President of the ACL Special Interest Group for Natural Language Learning (SIGNLL) from 2009 to 2011; Treasurer of the Northern European Association for Language Technology (NEALT) from 2006 until today.

Professor Nivre’s direct service to the community also includes chairing and organizing more than twenty conferences and workshops: Program Chair for the Swedish Treebank Symposium 2002, TLT 2003, TLT 2004, TLT 2006, NODALIDA 2007, SLTC 2008, EACL 2009; Tutorials Chair for ACL 2007; Publications Co-Chair for ACL 2008; Organizer of the CONLL Shared Tasks 2007, 2008, and co-organizer for CoNLL shared Tasks in 2017 and 2018; organizer of Parser Evaluation Workshop 2008, Scandinavian Conference of Linguistics 2008, Swedish Language Technology Conference 2008; he was also PC member NODALIDA 2009. In 2010, he has been the Local Arrangements Chair for ACL 2010, definitely one of the most demanding service tasks in the ACL community. After that, he was also the Program Chair of IWPT 2011, Area Chair at NAACL-HLT 2013 and Scientific Advisory Board member COLING 2014. He is now member of the International Committee for Computational Linguistics, a body that organizes the biannual COLING conferences.
