Position Description: Speech Recognition is a key part Vocera's platform offering to our customers. The result for our customers is saving time for their mission critical collaborations. This position will work on Vocera's Nuance N10 based recognition system. The role involves working on new speech recognition capabilities which will become part of the Vocera Platform.
The role will also quantify speech recognition accuracy for many of the currently enabled features in the Vocera product and conduct root-cause analysis of accuracy shortfalls using Nuance analysis tools. This high visibility role recommends a range of techniques for enhancing speech recognition accuracy from major algorithmic enhancements to minor parameter tuning which are backed by quantifiable metrics.
Responsibilities
- Function as the speech technologist program manager on: creating recognition test bed; designing experiments; hypothesis testing and analyzing results; summarizing key findings; making succinct recommendations
- Assist in recruiting and managing independent pool of outside transcriptionists
- Leverage the speech recognition test laboratory and develop needed tools/scripts to efficiently accomplish results and ensure repeatability
- Collaborate effectively within a small team of speech recognition leads, DSP engineers and client-server architects to identify, solve and test bottlenecks in accuracy and performance
- Use Python or C/C++/Java to develop utterance analysis and tuning programs
- Manage advanced projects such as acoustic model adaptation and statistical language modeling
- Interact with customer support, QA and marketing teams to identify new features and enhancements
- Occasionally conduct TOI's with other members of the engineering/Professional Services organizations on key insights
Competencies
- Thorough understanding of principles and concepts underlying speech recognition technology
- Scientific thinking and the ability to invent, a track record of thought leadership and contributions that have advanced the field
- Developing Syntax-semantic interfaces using ontologies
- Practical insights into the specific Nuance recognition engine used inside Vocera server
- Familiarity with Nuance analysis tool sets, Grammar Specification Language, and the recognition framework for Nuance
- Meticulous fact finder and scientific methodologist, who provides unbiased and factual reporting of results
- Ability to analyze complex cause-and-effect situations
- Ability to own and drive experimental definition, investigations, and ultimately be responsible for the speech recognition performance
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, especially for technical material
- Experience in natural language processing (NLP)
Requirements
- MS in the field of Speech Recognition, Computational Linguistics, or a related discipline or equivalent experience
- 8+ years of directly relevant experience in the field of automatic speech recognition and performance tuning in either research or industry
- Experience working specifically on Nuance recognition systems and speech applications strongly recommended
