Anne Ruggles Gere, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor and Gertrude Buck Collegiate Professor, is director of the Sweetland Center for Writing and serves as chair of the Joint PhD Program in English and Education. In addition to the two professorships, she has received the Regents’ Award for Distinguished Public Service, the D’Arms Award for Distinguished Graduate Student Mentoring, a Distinguished Faculty Achievement Award, a Michigan Humanities Award, and a fellowship from the Institute for the Humanities at the University of Michigan. She has also received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities and the Spencer Foundation.

She has served as president of the National Council of Teachers of English, as chair of the Conference on College Composition and Communication, and is the president of the Modern Language Association.

She is currently completing a five-year study of undergraduates’ writing development, and she is in the early stages of a project designed to integrate writing-to-learn pedagogies into large-enrollment gateway courses in STEM. This project, M-Write, aims to use automated text analysis to provide feedback about student learning to both students and faculty.

Professor Gere has published a dozen books and over 100 articles and is frequently invited to share her research with colleagues on other campuses.
