Nigel is a Director of Research at the University of Cambridge in the Section on Theoretical and Applied Linguistics. He is also a Turing Fellow at the UK's Alan Turing Institute for data science and artificial intelligence. Before this he was a Marie Curie Research Fellow at the European Bioinformatics Institute and an Associate Professor at the National Institute of Informatics in Japan. He received his PhD in 1996 from the University of Manchester for his research into how a Hopfield network could be used to perform machine translation. His research interests include Information Extraction and Text Mining (e.g. for Biology and Health), Veracity Detection, Web and Social Media, Sentiment Analysis and Opinion Mining, Grounding of Language, and Multi-modal NLP.
