Postdoctoral Researcher in Cardiff, UK

  • Employer: Cardiff University, UK
  • Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate
  • Specialty: NLP
  • Location: Cardiff, UK
  • Deadline: 31st May, 2021
  • Date posted: 14th May, 2021
  • Contact: Steven Schockaert

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the School of Computer Science and Informatics as a Research Associate working on a new project titled ‘Encyclopedic Lexical Representations for Natural Language Processing’. This project is funded by EPSRC and is due to start on 1 August 2021.

The successful candidate will be dedicated to finding creative solutions and have a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm to undertake world-class research in the field of Natural Language Processing. Specifically, the aim of this post will be to learn vector space embeddings that capture fine-grained knowledge about concepts. Different from existing approaches, these representations will explicitly represent the properties of, and relationships between concepts. Vectors in the proposed framework will thus intuitively play the role of facts, about which we can reason in a principled way. You will work closely with Steven Schockaert and Luis Espinosa Anke. You will possess or be near the completion of a PhD in Computer Science or a related area or have relevant industrial experience.

This is a full-time position for a period of three years. To apply, go to the Cardiff University jobs pages and search for vacancy 11424BR.

Description of the project:
The field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has made unprecedented progress over the last decade, but the extent to which NLP systems “understand” language is still remarkably limited. A key underlying problem is the need for a vast amount of world knowledge. In this project, we focus on conceptual knowledge, and more in particular on:

(i) capturing what properties are associated with a given concept (e.g. lions are dangerous, boats can float); (ii) characterising how different concepts are related (e.g. brooms are used for cleaning, bees produce honey).

Our proposed approach relies on the fact that Wikipedia contains a wealth of such knowledge. Unfortunately, however, important properties and relationships are often not explicitly mentioned in text, especially if they follow straightforwardly from other information for a human reader (e.g. if X is an animal that can fly then X probably has wings). Apart from learning to extract knowledge expressed in text, we thus also have to learn how to reason about conceptual knowledge.

A central question is how conceptual knowledge should be represented and incorporated in language model architectures. Current NLP systems heavily rely on vector representations in which each concept is represented by a single vector. This approach has important theoretical limitations in terms of what knowledge can be captured, and it only allows for shallow forms of reasoning. In contrast, in symbolic AI, conceptual knowledge is typically represented using facts and rules. This enables powerful forms of reasoning, but symbolic representations are harder to learn and to use in neural networks.

The solution we propose relies on a novel hybrid representation framework, which combines the main advantages of vector representations with those of symbolic methods. In particular, we will explicitly represent properties and relationships, as in symbolic frameworks, but these properties and relations will be encoded as vectors. Each concept will thus be associated with several property vectors, while pairs of related concepts will be associated with one or more relation vectors. Our vectors will thus intuitively play the same role that facts play in symbolic frameworks, with associated neural network models then playing the role of rules.

Our group (www.languagecycles.com) investigates how periodic electrophysiological activity of the human brain constrains our ability to understand language—and how this may have shaped human languages cross-linguistically. We link behavioral psycholinguistics, experimental neurolinguistics, and corpus linguistics.

The host institution is equipped with a system of compute servers and clusters, as well as access to the central high-performance computing facilities of the Max Planck Society. a 306-channel MEG system, several EEG systems, TMS, tDCS, two 3-T MRI scanners, a 7.0-T MRI scanner, and a SIEMENS Skyra Connectom high-field MRI scanner as available for neuroscientific research.

The successful candidate will investigate the relationship between spectral and temporal properties of human electrophysiology and statistical properties of human languages. To this end, the candidate shall devise innovative ways to link classical natural language processing (e.g., parsing, chunking) with time-series analysis (e.g., autocorrelation, Fourier analysis). The researcher is also expected to actively participate in the supervision of the group’s students. The position also encourages collaborative research within the Institute’s broad research portfolio (i.e., four departments as well as a line of junior research groups).

Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in computational linguistics, linguistic typology, data science, or an adjacent field. Prior international publications in renowned journals are desired. Postdoctoral Researcher in Natural Language Processing and Information Extraction, University of Southampton, United Kingdom

  • Employer: University of Southampton
  • Title: Research Fellow in Natural Language Processing and Information Extraction
  • Specialty: NLP, Information Extraction
  • Location: Southampton, United Kingdom
  • Deadline: 17th December 2020
  • Date posted: 17th November 2020
  • Contact: Dr Stuart E. Middleton sem03@soton.ac.uk

Project Background

You will join our team working on deep learning-based language models for information extraction and data rescue in the GloSAT (Global Surface Air Temperature) research project. The post will be in the Agents, Interaction and Complexity (AIC) group, which is part of the department of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton. The AIC group leads a number of nationally important research centres including the Trustworthy Autonomous System Research Hub (tas.ac.uk) and the UKRI MINDS Centre for Doctoral Training (mindscdt.ai).

The GloSAT project (www.glosat.org) is addressing uncertainties of climate change models using a combination of data rescue from historical documents to improve climate measurement data records, and improved climate change models making use of these improved records. An important aspect of data rescue is information extraction from typed and handwritten historical ship and land measurement station logbooks. Existing initiatives (www.weatherrescue.org) use crowdsourced volunteers to manually enter data tables for thousands of scanned images of measurement log book pages. This approach does not scale to the millions of scanned images of logbook pages waiting to be processed, but it does provide an excellent ground truth for an annotated training corpus.

Role

Your role will be to explore deep learning-based natural language models for information extraction leading to advances in column classification, relation extraction and knowledge-base population of tabular corpora. Identified domain context such as measurement type will be used for abnormality detection to improve the quality of the final measurement records. Tools for automated document layout analysis and optical character recognition have been developed within GloSAT to process millions of scanned images of logbook pages and generate a corpus of spatially annotated textual table components suitable for language modelling.

You will work in the context of a research partnership between the University of Southampton and UK research institutions including the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and UK Met Office. To be successful you will have a PhD+++ in natural language processing, artificial intelligence or a closely related subject and have experience of information extraction. In addition to research, an important part of the role is to interact with project partners, and to become familiar with the environmental science domain.

Appointment

The appointment is full time fixed term until 31/01/2023.

The department of Electronics and Computer Science is the leading university department of its kind in the UK, with an international reputation for world-leading research across computer science, electronics, and electrical engineering. Research takes place in a multidisciplinary, collaborative environment and draws on our outstanding facilities. With over 550 researchers from many different subject backgrounds, the research culture in ECS is fast-changing and dynamic. Our internationally renowned teaching and research have been ranked among the highest in the UK.

For informal enquiries before submitting your application, contact Dr Stuart E. Middleton sem03@soton.ac.uk

At the University of Southampton, we value diversity and equality.

+++ Applications for Research Fellow positions will be considered from candidates who are working towards or nearing completion of a relevant PhD qualification.

Project background

Together with our industry partner, we are currently exploring how we can make recent advances in NLP accessible to the Swiss media. Most models in natural language processing (NLP) show the best performance for English since, traditionally, research questions are addressed first for English texts. Besides, most available data sets are in English. This has led to a considerable performance gap between NLP methods for English and other languages. The media landscape of Switzerland offers a unique opportunity to advance the state-of-the-art in multilingual NLP research: Despite its small size, Switzerland has four official national languages and a variety of strong dialects that are used in written and oral communication.

Job descritpion

You will be responsible for 1-2 applied research projects with a clear focus on the potential impact for our industry partners. You will be developing new algorithms and systems as well as adapting the state-of-the-art to the specific challenges of our partners. In dialogue with our industry partners, you will develop novel methods that have a direct impact on the (Swiss) media industry. For this, you will be working closely together with research engineers that will implement your research into software prototypes. Many of the projects at the center are interdisciplinary and lie at the intersection of machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. You will be working on projects such as multilingual text summarization for news articles or automatic post-editing of machine-translated text to adapt it for journalistic purposes. Projects have clear deliverables and milestones and are decided upon by the media technology center's steering committee.

Your profile

  • Must hold Ph.D. in computer science or related fields (e.g., electrical engineering, computational science)
  • Proven track record in natural language processing (publications in conference venues such as ACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR)
  • Interest in working on applied research projects at the intersection between academia and industry.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication in English.
  • Speaking one of the national languages of Switzerland is a plus: German, French, Italian, Romansh.
