PhD Fellowship in Privacy-Enhancing NLP (University of Oslo, Norway)

Text documents often include personal data in one form or another (for instance clinical notes or court judgments). As stipulated by privacy regulations such as GDPR, personal information cannot typically be shared to third parties without the informed consent of the registered individuals. An alternative is to anonymize the data; that is, to edit the documents such as to mask all (direct or indirect) personal identifiers. However, the task of text anonymization remains an open problem and an active research area in Natural Language Processing. The successful candidate for this PhD fellowship position will contribute to research in the field of Privacy-Enhancing NLP. Areas of special interest are text anonymization and the development of automated adversaries to evaluate the robustness of anonymization methods against re-identification attacks.

The fellowship position is located at the Department of Informatics, and specifically in the Language Technology Group (LTG). LTG conducts research on a broad range of NLP topics including semantic parsing, sentiment analysis, text anonymization and large-scale language modeling. While the research profile of the group is heavily machine-learning oriented, projects conducted at LTG typically combine data-driven approaches with an interest for linguistic analysis and insight.

Postdoctoral Researcher in Cardiff, UK

  • Employer: Cardiff University, UK
  • Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate
  • Specialty: NLP
  • Location: Cardiff, UK
  • Deadline: 31st May, 2021
  • Date posted: 14th May, 2021
  • Contact: Steven Schockaert

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the School of Computer Science and Informatics as a Research Associate working on a new project titled ‘Encyclopedic Lexical Representations for Natural Language Processing’. This project is funded by EPSRC and is due to start on 1 August 2021.

The successful candidate will be dedicated to finding creative solutions and have a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm to undertake world-class research in the field of Natural Language Processing. Specifically, the aim of this post will be to learn vector space embeddings that capture fine-grained knowledge about concepts. Different from existing approaches, these representations will explicitly represent the properties of, and relationships between concepts. Vectors in the proposed framework will thus intuitively play the role of facts, about which we can reason in a principled way. You will work closely with Steven Schockaert and Luis Espinosa Anke. You will possess or be near the completion of a PhD in Computer Science or a related area or have relevant industrial experience.

This is a full-time position for a period of three years. To apply, go to the Cardiff University jobs pages and search for vacancy 11424BR.

Description of the project:
The field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has made unprecedented progress over the last decade, but the extent to which NLP systems “understand” language is still remarkably limited. A key underlying problem is the need for a vast amount of world knowledge. In this project, we focus on conceptual knowledge, and more in particular on:

(i) capturing what properties are associated with a given concept (e.g. lions are dangerous, boats can float); (ii) characterising how different concepts are related (e.g. brooms are used for cleaning, bees produce honey).

Our proposed approach relies on the fact that Wikipedia contains a wealth of such knowledge. Unfortunately, however, important properties and relationships are often not explicitly mentioned in text, especially if they follow straightforwardly from other information for a human reader (e.g. if X is an animal that can fly then X probably has wings). Apart from learning to extract knowledge expressed in text, we thus also have to learn how to reason about conceptual knowledge.

A central question is how conceptual knowledge should be represented and incorporated in language model architectures. Current NLP systems heavily rely on vector representations in which each concept is represented by a single vector. This approach has important theoretical limitations in terms of what knowledge can be captured, and it only allows for shallow forms of reasoning. In contrast, in symbolic AI, conceptual knowledge is typically represented using facts and rules. This enables powerful forms of reasoning, but symbolic representations are harder to learn and to use in neural networks.

The solution we propose relies on a novel hybrid representation framework, which combines the main advantages of vector representations with those of symbolic methods. In particular, we will explicitly represent properties and relationships, as in symbolic frameworks, but these properties and relations will be encoded as vectors. Each concept will thus be associated with several property vectors, while pairs of related concepts will be associated with one or more relation vectors. Our vectors will thus intuitively play the same role that facts play in symbolic frameworks, with associated neural network models then playing the role of rules.

  • Title: Postdoctoral Researcher
  • Specialty: NLP, Machine Translation
  • Location: Zurich, Switzerland
  • Deadline: applications currently accepted and reviewed on a rolling basis
  • Date posted: August 27, 2020
  • Contact: Mr. Severin Klingler

The ETH Media Technology Center is a place where you will work at the intersection of research and industry applications. Together with our industry partners, we are building the media technologies of tomorrow. To achieve this, the center provides a platform to work on technological innovations at the intersection of media technology, digital journalism, and design. To join our interdisciplinary team, we offer a position as a Postdoctoral Researcher in Natural Language Processing.

Project background

Together with our industry partner, we are currently exploring how we can make recent advances in NLP accessible to the Swiss media. Most models in natural language processing (NLP) show the best performance for English since, traditionally, research questions are addressed first for English texts. Besides, most available data sets are in English. This has led to a considerable performance gap between NLP methods for English and other languages. The media landscape of Switzerland offers a unique opportunity to advance the state-of-the-art in multilingual NLP research: Despite its small size, Switzerland has four official national languages and a variety of strong dialects that are used in written and oral communication.

Job descritpion

You will be responsible for 1-2 applied research projects with a clear focus on the potential impact for our industry partners. You will be developing new algorithms and systems as well as adapting the state-of-the-art to the specific challenges of our partners. In dialogue with our industry partners, you will develop novel methods that have a direct impact on the (Swiss) media industry. For this, you will be working closely together with research engineers that will implement your research into software prototypes. Many of the projects at the center are interdisciplinary and lie at the intersection of machine learning, computer vision, and natural language processing. You will be working on projects such as multilingual text summarization for news articles or automatic post-editing of machine-translated text to adapt it for journalistic purposes. Projects have clear deliverables and milestones and are decided upon by the media technology center's steering committee.

Your profile

  • Must hold Ph.D. in computer science or related fields (e.g., electrical engineering, computational science)
  • Proven track record in natural language processing (publications in conference venues such as ACL, EMNLP, NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR)
  • Interest in working on applied research projects at the intersection between academia and industry.
  • Proficiency in written and verbal communication in English.
  • Speaking one of the national languages of Switzerland is a plus: German, French, Italian, Romansh.

Interested?

PostDoc or PhD in Secure and Robust Natural Language Processing, UKP Lab, Computer Science Department, TU Darmstadt

UKP Lab of the Department of Computer Science, Technische Universität (TU) Darmstadt, Germany has an opening for an

Associate Research Scientist "Secure and Robust NLP" (PostDoc- or PhD-level; for an initial term until the end of 2021)

as part of the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE [1]. We are part of the research mission "SenPAI-Security and Privacy in AI". While AI becomes more common as a tool for various security applications where data must be analysed, clustered or attributed, the security of the applied AI algorithms is often limited. Various research results in the past years show shortcomings of trained neural nets (NN) like the lack of robustness against targeted attacks. The focus of our contribution to SenPAI is in (i) An automatic penetration testing system for NLP: A modular toolkit with common strategies to attack NLP models. This toolkit allows the wide-spread evaluation of state-of-the-art and in-production NLP systems; and (ii) Robust training objectives for NLP systems: State-of-the-art learning systems are equipped with the automatic attack toolkit in order to generate more robust NLP models. The goal is to have NLP models which are robust against new, unseen attacks and which require a higher effort to bypass them.

For this project, we are looking to hire a PostDoc or a PhD student with both a strong background in Natural Language Processing and a strong interest to contribute to applied security. We plan to cooperate with Fraunhofer SIT in Darmstadt and several other machine learning labs involved in SenPAI.
