We offer a two-year research position for a postdoctoral or predoctoral scientist on the topic of explainable AI in the context of natural language processing of clinical reports at the Department of Computer Science, KU Leuven.. The position is financed by the CHIST-ERA project ANTIDOTE (ArgumeNtaTIon-Driven explainable artificial intelligence fOr digiTal mEdicine). The project focuses on deep learning models for text classification (e.g. diagnosis prediction) in the medical domain, where the need for high quality explanations of clinical decisions is critical. The project proposes an integrated approach for the understanding of textual medical data and the generation of a textual explanation to justify a medical diagnosis made by a neural network, so that clinicians can judge its validity. The partners of the ANTIDOTE project provide annotated argumentative structures of natural language explanations of medical decisions (human explanations). We will also leverage larger-scale data (without annotated explanation) in order to improve explanation generation. One way would be to use feature importance techniques (Integrated gradients, LIME or preferably search-based methods) applied to models trained to perform medical decisions, to guide explanation generation. KU Leuven is declared the most innovative university in Europe by Reuters four years in a row and is ranked 42th on the Times Higher Education World University Ranking (2022).

Text documents often include personal data in one form or another (for instance clinical notes or court judgments). As stipulated by privacy regulations such as GDPR, personal information cannot typically be shared to third parties without the informed consent of the registered individuals. An alternative is to anonymize the data; that is, to edit the documents such as to mask all (direct or indirect) personal identifiers. However, the task of text anonymization remains an open problem and an active research area in Natural Language Processing. The successful candidate for this PhD fellowship position will contribute to research in the field of Privacy-Enhancing NLP. Areas of special interest are text anonymization and the development of automated adversaries to evaluate the robustness of anonymization methods against re-identification attacks.
The fellowship position is located at the Department of Informatics, and specifically in the Language Technology Group (LTG). LTG conducts research on a broad range of NLP topics including semantic parsing, sentiment analysis, text anonymization and large-scale language modeling. While the research profile of the group is heavily machine-learning oriented, projects conducted at LTG typically combine data-driven approaches with an interest for linguistic analysis and insight.
The PhD fellowship will be part of a collaboration with the research group on Digital Security (SEC), which works on different topics within information security, including cyber threat intelligence, ethical hacking, data privacy and post-quantum cryptography. The SEC research group collaborates with external partners with heightened security requirements. Therefore, applicants to this position must be able to receive Norwegian security clearance.
The PhD will be co-supervised by Pierre Lison (LTG) and Nils Gruschka (SEC).

Role
You will join our team working on deep learning-based Natural Language Processing (NLP) models for data rescue as part of the GloSAT (Global Surface Air Temperature) research project. The post will be in the Agents, Interaction and Complexity (AIC) group, which is part of the department of Electronics and Computer Science (ECS) at the University of Southampton. The AIC group leads a number of nationally important research centres including the Trustworthy Autonomous System Research Hub (tas.ac.uk) and the UKRI MINDS Centre for Doctoral Training (mindscdt.ai).
The GloSAT project (www.glosat.org) is addressing uncertainties of climate change models using a combination of data rescue from historical documents to improve climate measurement data records, and improved climate change models making use of these improved records. An important aspect of data rescue is information extraction from typed and handwritten historical ship and land measurement station logbooks.
Your role will be to develop deep learning-based NLP models which can operate alongside a major citizen science site (rainfallrescue.org). You will explore novel NLP models for information extraction of tabular measurement data and semantic labels from a large text corpus originating from a GloSAT pipeline of table structure and optical character recognition tools. The GloSAT project has access to 100,000's of manually annotated data tables from the rainfall rescue citizen science site. You will explore how NLP models can be pre-trained using this corpus and then iteratively fine-tuned using human-in-the-loop active learning and/or adversarial training using dynamic citizen science annotations.

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the School of Computer Science and Informatics as a Research Associate working on a new project titled ‘Encyclopedic Lexical Representations for Natural Language Processing’. This project is funded by EPSRC and is due to start on 1 August 2021.
The successful candidate will be dedicated to finding creative solutions and have a genuine curiosity and enthusiasm to undertake world-class research in the field of Natural Language Processing. Specifically, the aim of this post will be to learn vector space embeddings that capture fine-grained knowledge about concepts. Different from existing approaches, these representations will explicitly represent the properties of, and relationships between concepts. Vectors in the proposed framework will thus intuitively play the role of facts, about which we can reason in a principled way. You will work closely with Steven Schockaert and Luis Espinosa Anke. You will possess or be near the completion of a PhD in Computer Science or a related area or have relevant industrial experience.
This is a full-time position for a period of three years. To apply, go to the Cardiff University jobs pages and search for vacancy 11424BR.
Description of the project:
The field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has made unprecedented progress over the last decade, but the extent to which NLP systems “understand” language is still remarkably limited. A key underlying problem is the need for a vast amount of world knowledge. In this project, we focus on conceptual knowledge, and more in particular on:
(i) capturing what properties are associated with a given concept (e.g. lions are dangerous, boats can float); (ii) characterising how different concepts are related (e.g. brooms are used for cleaning, bees produce honey).
Our proposed approach relies on the fact that Wikipedia contains a wealth of such knowledge. Unfortunately, however, important properties and relationships are often not explicitly mentioned in text, especially if they follow straightforwardly from other information for a human reader (e.g. if X is an animal that can fly then X probably has wings). Apart from learning to extract knowledge expressed in text, we thus also have to learn how to reason about conceptual knowledge.
A central question is how conceptual knowledge should be represented and incorporated in language model architectures. Current NLP systems heavily rely on vector representations in which each concept is represented by a single vector. This approach has important theoretical limitations in terms of what knowledge can be captured, and it only allows for shallow forms of reasoning. In contrast, in symbolic AI, conceptual knowledge is typically represented using facts and rules. This enables powerful forms of reasoning, but symbolic representations are harder to learn and to use in neural networks.
The solution we propose relies on a novel hybrid representation framework, which combines the main advantages of vector representations with those of symbolic methods. In particular, we will explicitly represent properties and relationships, as in symbolic frameworks, but these properties and relations will be encoded as vectors. Each concept will thus be associated with several property vectors, while pairs of related concepts will be associated with one or more relation vectors. Our vectors will thus intuitively play the same role that facts play in symbolic frameworks, with associated neural network models then playing the role of rules.

The host institution is equipped with a system of compute servers and clusters, as well as access to the central high-performance computing facilities of the Max Planck Society. a 306-channel MEG system, several EEG systems, TMS, tDCS, two 3-T MRI scanners, a 7.0-T MRI scanner, and a SIEMENS Skyra Connectom high-field MRI scanner as available for neuroscientific research.
The successful candidate will investigate the relationship between spectral and temporal properties of human electrophysiology and statistical properties of human languages. To this end, the candidate shall devise innovative ways to link classical natural language processing (e.g., parsing, chunking) with time-series analysis (e.g., autocorrelation, Fourier analysis). The researcher is also expected to actively participate in the supervision of the group’s students. The position also encourages collaborative research within the Institute’s broad research portfolio (i.e., four departments as well as a line of junior research groups).
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in computational linguistics, linguistic typology, data science, or an adjacent field. Prior international publications in renowned journals are desired. We expect profound experience with annotated linguistic corpora, natural language processing, information theory, and artificial intelligence (e.g. machine learning). The ideal candidate will be versed in time– and frequency-domain time-series analysis and be fluent in Python™, MATLAB® and R.
The start date of the position should be no later than 1st March 2021. The duration of the post is 2 years, with the possibility of an extension for up to three years. Remuneration is based on the pay scale of the Max Planck Society.
The Max Planck Society is committed to increasing the number of individuals with disabilities in its workforce and therefore encourages applications from such qualified individuals. International applicants are strongly encouraged to apply.
To apply, please submit a cover letter, your curriculum vitae, a motivational statement referring to all aspects of this call, contact information of two referees, academic certificates, and three prior publications that illustrate suitability. as part of the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE [1]. We are part of the research mission "SenPAI-Security and Privacy in AI". While AI becomes more common as a tool for various security applications where data must be analysed, clustered or attributed, the security of the applied AI algorithms is often limited. Various research results in the past years show shortcomings of trained neural nets (NN) like the lack of robustness against targeted attacks. The focus of our contribution to SenPAI is in (i) An automatic penetration testing system for NLP: A modular toolkit with common strategies to attack NLP models. This toolkit allows the wide-spread evaluation of state-of-the-art and in-production NLP systems; and (ii) Robust training objectives for NLP systems: State-of-the-art learning systems are equipped with the automatic attack toolkit in order to generate more robust NLP models. The goal is to have NLP models which are robust against new, unseen attacks and which require a higher effort to bypass them.
For this project, we are looking to hire a PostDoc or a PhD student with both a strong background in Natural Language Processing and a strong interest to contribute to applied security.
