The future job holder must be excellently qualified in research in the field of general / computational linguistics, evidenced by relevant publications in leading journals and conference proceedings.

Since the professorship plays a leading role in the partly international Bachelor and Master programs Computational Linguistics, General Linguistics and Cognitive Science, the future position holder needs to be able to represent the full bandwidth of Computational Linguistics including its interdisciplinary connections with General Linguistics and Cognitive Science.

The nascent TUM Legal Tech working group at the TUM Department of Informatics conducts research and development around the application of methods from artificial intelligence, machine learning, data science, natural language processing, and knowledge engineering towards solving tasks and problems arising in the practice of law and public administration. The position's primary focus will be developing (i.e., pre-train, fine-tune, evaluate) a custom German law-focused LLM in collaboration with the state justice ministries of Bavaria and Northrhine-Westphalia, and the University of Cologne Law School. We are also surveying the use of LLMs in the legislative process in a project funded by the German Federal finance ministry. Additional topical projects may be available, and we expect some participation in teaching and student mentoring. Modern DNA sequencing technologies enable us to probe the genetics of individual cancers. Each cancer is unique and can have a multitude of mutations. However, understanding the importance and impact of each of those mutations is hugely challenging and relies heavily on searching the research literature. The CIViC database, managed by the Griffith Lab at Washington University at St Louis, collates this knowledge on cancer mutations from research papers for fast searching by clinicians and researchers worldwide. However, keeping it up to date involves a lot of human effort to read the latest research. The collaboration with Glasgow will enable the latest innovations in language technologies to be applied to automatically process research papers and flag relevant research useful for the CIViC database. This will involve development of natural language processing techniques to identify mentions of mutations and cancers and their associations. No background knowledge of biology/medicine is required.
Salary: Grade 6 (£32,332 - £36,024) / Grade 7 (£39,347 - £44,263)

The funding for the position is provided by the recently established Estonian Centre of Excellence in AI (EXAI), which gathers various research teams from several Estonian research institutions.

The Idiap Research Institute seeks qualified candidates for three PhD student positions in deep learning for natural language, one focussing on neuroscience and two focussing on representation learning. In partnership with the DHS National Counterterrorism Innovation, Technology, and Education (NCITE) Center of Excellence at UNO and collaborators at Temple University we are seeking a postdoctoral researcher on a high-exposure project related to online extremism and the transition to real-world violence.
Using NLP and Machine Learning techniques we are seeking to develop a real-time analytics system to monitor online discourse with the end-goal of estimating the threat-level faced by government officials, institutions, and other non-public persons (esp. elections officials). Related extensions of this extremism research seeks to assess the threat-risk to other targeted groups and to map the online space of violent anti-government groups and violent hate groups.
For post-doctoral candidates targeting an academic posting our team of faculty will actively support you in this endeavor through a "post-doc first" posture, while actively facilitating connections and meaningful partnerships with our CoPIs at Gatech, Nebraska, Temple, and elsewhere. Support does not just come from project PIs but the whole Industrial Engineering department at UCF - through such joint efforts we have successfully placed a number of post-docs in tenure-track faculty positions.

This project is funded by the EPSRC iCASE (sponsored by BAE Systems) to conduct research in the area of multimodal natural language processing (NLP) for model-based systems engineering based on Large Language Models (LLMs). LLMs have demonstrated a remarkable ability to generate text when presented with images, text, audio and video as input. They are able to achieve higher performance than traditional neural methods and pre-trained language models, without the need for supervised training.
The project will examine different approaches to multimodal LLM-based NLP to address complex and fine-grained tasks such as reasoning in model-based systems engineering. The PhD will delve into LLM architectures, data augmentation methods, multi-task and domain-specific LLMs, prompting engineering and interpretability.
The candidate will have the opportunity to work with experts at BAE to gain experience in the practical application of model-based systems engineering. The candidate will join the world-class teams of Prof. S. Ananiadou (Computer Science and National Centre for Text Mining, Natural Language Processing, LLMs) and Prof. H. Yin (Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Deep Learning, Computer Vision).
Requirements
You will have a very good undergraduate degree in Computer Science (minimum 2:1 UK or equivalent for EU students). Experience: The Department of Linguistics at Brigham Young University is excited to announce a position for a full-time faculty position in the field of linguistics encouraging those at any career stage to apply. Do you want to work on Natural Language Processing (NLP) and aspects of fairness and representation in Machine Learning (ML)? We are looking for a highly motivated and curious PhD candidate to join the Industrial Engineering and Business Information Systems (IEBIS) section of the High-tech Business & Entrepreneurship Department (HBE) at the University of Twente in the Netherlands.
ML and NLP approaches and the processes surrounding them often focus on finding a single “truth” or gold standard by majority vote and removing any “outliers”. From the curation of data sets (where we use measurements like inter-annotator agreement as a quality attribute) to the presentation of results (where less favorable options are regularly excluded), different perspectives and disagreements are typically excluded in ML. In reality, such a single truth often does not exist. From the legal to the medical domain, experts often have different opinions. Erasing deviating perspectives and disagreement is not only an untruthful representation of reality, but it can also negatively impact the reliability and usefulness of an ML system. In societal and political debates, having and exchanging different opinions is even one of the defining properties of democratic societies. This PhD project aims to investigate how different opinions of and disagreements between annotators and other sources for “ground truth” can be represented in NLP and leveraged to improve the support that AI systems can provide to their users. The project will consider all steps of the process, from the gathering and annotation of data, the use of the data to train NLP models, to the representation of results.
Responsibilities
During the project, the PhD candidate will perform research on some of the following tasks:
- Design experiments to create annotated text corpora;
- Develop new NLP models and approaches using Python and train and fine-tune existing open-source models;
- Perform intrinsic evaluation of ML models;
- Apply the insights gained to specific domains of application;
- Develop software prototypes for performing task-based evaluations.
As a doctoral student, your key responsibilities will be to manage and carry out your research project within 48 months and write a PhD thesis. You will participate in research and training activities and disseminate research in the scientific community (international conferences) and non-scientific community by outreach and public engagement. Furthermore, you will write articles for scientific peer-reviewed journals and progress reports and prepare results for publication and dissemination via public lectures, presentations, and the web. You will also be responsible for taking courses per the research education and liaising with the other research staff, students, and partner institutions working in broad areas relevant to the research project. Participation in other department duties, such as meetings, teaching, etc., is expected to cover a maximum scope of 20%.
Your profile
- A background in Natural Language Processing;
- A strong interest in ethical and societal aspects of AI;
- You hold, or will shortly acquire, a master’s degree in Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, Information Systems, or a related discipline;
- Demonstrated programming skills in Python, JavaScript or similar languages;
- First experience with user studies is a plus;
- Capable of conducting independent research and willing to develop writing and publication skills;
- Proficient in written and oral English (C1; above IELTS 7 or equivalent);

THE COLLEGE/ DEPARTMENT: The Department of Psychology at RIT offers B.S., M.S. degrees, Advanced Certificates, minors, immersions, electives, and a new interdisciplinary Ph.D. degree program in Cognitive Science. Online hate speech has resulted in actual hate crimes. INDOMITA offers automated assistance to combat online hate speech. However, hatred is complex. The offensiveness of a phrase is determined by social customs and user demographics: "Yo, a**hole!" is acceptable among friends but not strangers. Our user-centric approach takes into account social customs and user demographics to enhance detection of nuanced forms of hate speech. We will use three strategies: - modeling a complex problem with socio-demographic context, - automating counter-argument and responding to aggressive users, and - creating evaluation methods to analyze fairness, performance, and subjectivity. Our research will bridge language gaps and shed light on the relationships between online actors and online hatred. Data Science is beginning to advance our understanding of society and human behavior in ways that pose grand challenges to our understanding of how humans learn, use, and process natural language. HDSI is pursuing a strategy for advancing Data Science that builds upon its unique strengths in creating interdisciplinary research areas that span multiple disciplines and departments. The Department of Linguistics takes a strong interdisciplinary approach to language research that combines theory, computation, and experimentation. The department plays a central role in the new Computational Social Science (CSS) program within the School of Social Sciences, creating an excellent opportunity to collaborate in bringing together the emerging discipline of Data Science with research challenges in Linguistics, to be led by scholars with strong linguistic, quantitative, and computational skills.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
The University of California, San Diego invites applications for an Assistant Professor (tenure-track) in the broad area of Natural Language Processing. This position will hold a joint appointment in the Department of Linguistics and the Halicioğlu Data Science Institute (HDSI), to begin in Fall 2023.
Data Science is beginning to advance our understanding of society and human behavior in ways that pose grand challenges to our understanding of how humans learn, use, and process natural language. HDSI is pursuing a strategy for advancing Data Science that builds upon its unique strengths in creating interdisciplinary research areas that span multiple disciplines and departments. The Department of Linguistics takes a strong interdisciplinary approach to language research that combines theory, computation, and experimentation. The department plays a central role in the new Computational Social Science (CSS) program within the School of Social Sciences, creating an excellent opportunity to collaborate in bringing together the emerging discipline of Data Science with research challenges in Linguistics, to be led by scholars with strong linguistic, quantitative, and computational skills.
We seek exceptional candidates with a strong record of publications and research in this interdisciplinary area. The selected candidate is expected to teach undergraduate and graduate level courses, as well as mentor students, in both Linguistics and HDSI. They will conduct and publish research and participate in professional activities (e.g., conferences) in the field of Natural Language Processing. They are also expected to participate in department and university service as academic members of the campus community.

The partners of the ANTIDOTE project provide annotated argumentative structures of natural language explanations of medical decisions (human explanations). We will also leverage larger-scale data (without annotated explanation) in order to improve explanation generation. One way would be to use feature importance techniques (Integrated gradients, LIME or preferably search-based methods) applied to models trained to perform medical decisions, to guide explanation generation. Text documents often include personal data in one form or another (for instance clinical notes or court judgments). As stipulated by privacy regulations such as GDPR, personal information cannot typically be shared to third parties without the informed consent of the registered individuals. An alternative is to anonymize the data; that is, to edit the documents such as to mask all (direct or indirect) personal identifiers. However, the task of text anonymization remains an open problem and an active research area in Natural Language Processing. The successful candidate for this PhD fellowship position will contribute to research in the field of Privacy-Enhancing NLP. Areas of special interest are text anonymization and the development of automated adversaries to evaluate the robustness of anonymization methods against re-identification attacks.
The fellowship position is located at the Department of Informatics, and specifically in the Language Technology Group (LTG). LTG conducts research on a broad range of NLP topics including semantic parsing, sentiment analysis, text anonymization and large-scale language modeling. You will join our team working on deep learning-based Natural Language Processing (NLP) models for data rescue as part of the GloSAT (Global Surface Air Temperature) research project. The AIC group leads a number of nationally important research centres including the Trustworthy Autonomous System Research Hub (tas.ac.uk) and the UKRI MINDS Centre for Doctoral Training (mindscdt.ai).
The GloSAT project (www.glosat.org) is addressing uncertainties of climate change models using a combination of data rescue from historical documents to improve climate measurement data records, and improved climate change models making use of these improved records. An important aspect of data rescue is information extraction from typed and handwritten historical ship and land measurement station logbooks.
Your role will be to develop deep learning-based NLP models which can operate alongside a major citizen science site (rainfallrescue.org). You will explore novel NLP models for information extraction of tabular measurement data and semantic labels from a large text corpus originating from a GloSAT pipeline of table structure and optical character recognition tools. The GloSAT project has access to 100,000's of manually annotated data tables from the rainfall rescue citizen science site. You will explore how NLP models can be pre-trained using this corpus and then iteratively fine-tuned using human-in-the-loop active learning and/or adversarial training using dynamic citizen science annotations.
You will work in the context of a research partnership between the University of Southampton and UK research institutions including the National Oceanography Centre (NOC) and UK Met Office. To be successful you will have a PhD* or equivalent professional qualifications and experience in natural language processing, artificial intelligence or a closely related subject and have experience of information extraction. Description of the project:
The field of Natural Language Processing (NLP) has made unprecedented progress over the last decade, but the extent to which NLP systems “understand” language is still remarkably limited. A key underlying problem is the need for a vast amount of world knowledge. In this project, we focus on conceptual knowledge, and more in particular on:
(i) capturing what properties are associated with a given concept (e.g. lions are dangerous, boats can float); (ii) characterising how different concepts are related (e.g. brooms are used for cleaning, bees produce honey).
Our proposed approach relies on the fact that Wikipedia contains a wealth of such knowledge. Unfortunately, however, important properties and relationships are often not explicitly mentioned in text, especially if they follow straightforwardly from other information for a human reader (e.g. if X is an animal that can fly then X probably has wings). Apart from learning to extract knowledge expressed in text, we thus also have to learn how to reason about conceptual knowledge.
A central question is how conceptual knowledge should be represented and incorporated in language model architectures. Current NLP systems heavily rely on vector representations in which each concept is represented by a single vector. This approach has important theoretical limitations in terms of what knowledge can be captured, and it only allows for shallow forms of reasoning. In contrast, in symbolic AI, conceptual knowledge is typically represented using facts and rules. This enables powerful forms of reasoning, but symbolic representations are harder to learn and to use in neural networks.
The solution we propose relies on a novel hybrid representation framework, which combines the main advantages of vector representations with those of symbolic methods. In particular, we will explicitly represent properties and relationships, as in symbolic frameworks, but these properties and relations will be encoded as vectors. Each concept will thus be associated with several property vectors, while pairs of related concepts will be associated with one or more relation vectors. Our vectors will thus intuitively play the same role that facts play in symbolic frameworks, with associated neural network models then playing the role of rules.

The successful candidate will investigate the relationship between spectral and temporal properties of human electrophysiology and statistical properties of human languages. To this end, the candidate shall devise innovative ways to link classical natural language processing (e.g., parsing, chunking) with time-series analysis (e.g., autocorrelation, Fourier analysis). The researcher is also expected to actively participate in the supervision of the group’s students. The position also encourages collaborative research within the Institute’s broad research portfolio (i.e., four departments as well as a line of junior research groups).
Applicants must hold a doctoral degree in computational linguistics, linguistic typology, data science, or an adjacent field. Prior international publications in renowned journals are desired. The Artificial Intelligence Research Centre, Japan and the National Centre for Text Mining (UK) invite applications for two Research Fellows in Natural Language Processing. This is an exciting opportunity for two ambitious researchers to work on a major interdisciplinary project on Cancer, funded by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development. The posts aim to promote novel research into information extraction and knowledge discovery for immunotherapy for cancer mechanisms. The two fellows will work together and will also collaborate with NLP researchers both in Japan and in the UK, as well as with data scientists and medical practitioners in Japan.
Although the posts will be located in AIRC, Japan (https://www.airc.aist.go.jp/en/intro/), the NLP research will be carried out in collaboration with the National Centre for Text Mining (NaCTeM) (http://www.nactem.ac.uk), Department of Computer Science at The University of Manchester. as part of the National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity ATHENE [1]. We are part of the research mission "SenPAI-Security and Privacy in AI". While AI becomes more common as a tool for various security applications where data must be analysed, clustered or attributed, the security of the applied AI algorithms is often limited. Various research results in the past years show shortcomings of trained neural nets (NN) like the lack of robustness against targeted attacks. The focus of our contribution to SenPAI is in (i) An automatic penetration testing system for NLP: A modular toolkit with common strategies to attack NLP models. This toolkit allows the wide-spread evaluation of state-of-the-art and in-production NLP systems; and (ii) Robust training objectives for NLP systems: State-of-the-art learning systems are equipped with the automatic attack toolkit in order to generate more robust NLP models. The goal is to have NLP models which are robust against new, unseen attacks and which require a higher effort to bypass them.
For this project, we are looking to hire a PostDoc or a PhD student with both a strong background in Natural Language Processing and a strong interest to contribute to applied security. We plan to cooperate with Fraunhofer SIT in Darmstadt and several other machine learning labs involved in SenPAI.
