Djoerd Hiemstra is professor of Federated Search at the Faculty of Science of Radboud University, the Netherlands. Djoerd obtained a PhD degree from the University of Twente for his research into the use of language models in information retrieval. He was the coordinator and main designer of a number of courses, teaches in the Bachelor's and Master's programmes, and gave lectures for the Netherlands Research School for Information and Knowledge Systems and at various international summer schools. At Radboud University, Hiemstra will significantly boost the research into Responsible Data Science through his work on federated systems. He will also take charge of the mandatory Databases course for first-year computing science students and adapt it to an age in which data science is a widely sought-after expertise among our graduates.
