Mitchell Marcus is the RCA Professor of Artificial Intelligence in the Department of Computer and Information Science at the University of Pennsylvania, where he is also Professor of Linguistics. He studied Linguistics and Applied Mathematics at Harvard University as an undergraduate, received his Ph.D. in 1978 from the MIT Artificial Intelligence Lab, and was a Member of Technical Staff at AT&T Bell Laboratories. He has served as Chair of the Department of Computer and Information Science at Penn, as Chair of the Penn Faculty Senate, as well as President of the Association for Computational Linguistics. He is a Fellow of the American Association of Artificial Intelligence. He was the principal investigator for the Penn Treebank Project through the mid-1990s. Research interests include: statistical natural language processing, methodologies for annotation of linguistic structure in large text corpora, human-robot communication, and natural language processing.
