LOCATION: Headquarters Air Force Materiel Command Wright Patterson AFB Air Force Research Laboratory Human Effectiveness Directorate Wright-Patterson AFB OH

MAJOR DUTIES: A team member contributing to all phases of basic research, applied research, and prototype development projects involving the application of linguistic and computer science principles to the technical areas of computational linguistics and natural language processing with application to speech-to speech translation, machine translation of foreign languages, information retrieval, named entity detection, topic detection, text categorization, text processing, speech recognition, speech synthesis and speech processing. Given research objectives, determines how best to accomplish them, develops and evaluates alternatives, designs and conducts experiments, analyzes and interpret results, publishes papers and technical reports, delivers presentations of research results, monitors in-house and contractual work efforts, and meets with customers to determine technology needs.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: This position is an acquisition position. It requires the appropriate certification level, Level 2 in SPRD&E. The selectee must be able to meet those certification requirements within 24 months of placement or a position certification waiver must be obtain.

Qualifications:

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS: You must meet the basic qualification requirements for a Social Scientist position in the federal government.

Successful completion of at least a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university that included a major field of study in behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. or A combination of education and experience --that has provided me with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. or Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrates your acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field.

Additional Qualification Requirements: In addition to the education or appropriate experience requirements outlined above. Applicants must have at least one-year of specialized experience. This experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of this position and is typically in or related to the work of this position. To qualify for this position, applicants must have at least 1 full year of specialized experience which is experience in developing, programming, and testing algorithms in one of the following areas: machine translation, speech-to-speech translation, language modeling, parsing, part-of-speech tagging, information extraction (e.g., named entity extraction), or topic detection.

PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: One year of work experience is calculated as twelve months, working full-time (at least 35-40 hours per week). Part-time experience can be pro-rated, i.e., twelve months working 20 hours per week is credited as 6 months of experience. Credit will be given for unpaid work experience or volunteer work, such as community, cultural, social service, and professional association activities on the same basis as for the paid experience.

Only experience obtained by the closing date of this announcement will be considered.
