EACL 2014

Report by Stephen Clark

The General Chair, Shuly Wintner, has provided a separate report. All I will add here, in general terms, is that Shuly did a fantastic job in overseeing the conference, as did the Program Chairs, Stefan Riezler and Sharon Goldwater, in preparing the program. The Local Chairs also deserve a lot of credit, and overall I would say that EACL 2014 was a complete success.

More specifically, one area that needs to be looked at before EACL 2017 is the joint organisation of the workshops. EACL tends to suffer in the joint timetable, since it is always the earliest conference of the year, resulting in a very tight schedule for the EACL workshops. Lluís, the Chair-Elect, is in an excellent position to investigate this further since Lluís was the workshops co-chair for ACL this year.

The call for bids for EACL 2017 is currently being prepared by the Chair-Elect, and the first call will be sent out in Autumn 2014.

EACL Sponsorships

Five students were sponsored for EACL 2014, for up to 500 Euro each, in line with the EACL Sponsorship Policy. The five students were nominated by the EACL Student Research Workshop (SRW) Chairs, who oversaw the solicitation and selection process, and confirmed by the EACL Board.

EACL Web Pages

We are in the process of revamping the EACL web pages, to make them more up-to-date and maintainable. Alexander Koller and Douwe Kiela are heading this initiative. All the changes have been agreed, and it only remains to make the changes to the current content. The aim is to have the new web site up and running by the end of 2014.

EACL Conference Handbook

The current ACL Conference Handbook is useful in many respects, but some of the content is out of date, and not all of it applies to EACL conferences. Hence we have created a new Conference Handbook, based on the ACL model and sharing much of its content, but tailored towards EACL. This initiative has been led by Stephen Clark and Vivi Nastase, with input from the other members of the EACL Board, and Shuly Wintner, the General Chair of EACL 2014. The new Handbook is complete and ready to go online when the new EACL web pages are launched. We hope that this will be an invaluable resource for the Chairs of the EACL 2017 conference (and beyond).
