ACL-2011 Report, May 2008 Ido Dagan

The 49th Meeting of the Association for Computational Linguistics will take place in America (North, South, or Central) in June or July 2011. According to our policy on joint conferences I am responsible for chairing the Coordinating Committee for ACL-2011.

The initial membership of this group is as follows, and will be updated as officers change in the respective organizations:

  • Owen Rambow (as NAACL chair)
  • Suzanne Stevenson (as NAACL secretary)
  • Chris Manning (as NAACL treasurer)
  • Ido Dagan (as ACL past-president in 2011)
  • Dragomir Radev (as ACL secretary)
  • Graeme Hirst (as ACL treasurer)
  • Priscilla Rasmussen (as business officer of the ACL)

One additional member from each organization will be added to the committee, possibly in early 2009 to ensure continuity of service until the 2011 conference.

A preliminary announcement of the call for bids to host ACL-2011 will be posted shortly before ACL-08. It will permit potential hosts to start discussing their bid with colleagues, with the coordinating committee members and with the organizers of this year's meeting, and will facilitate initial identification and promotion of potential bidders. A detailed call for draft bids will be posted following the ACL-08 conference. At this point we solicit any ideas regarding potential bidders.

At ACL-08 we will have a meeting of the 2011 coordinating committee, together with Steven Bird who chairs the ACL-2010 committee, to learn from past experience and primarily to update the templates and instructions for bidders. We plan to follow and enhance some directions implemented in the NAACL 2010 bidding process, which aim to streamline and simplify the required work of bidders and of the selected local organization team.
