EACL-2020

We received several expressions of interest to organize EACL 2020 as a response to our call late 2017. EACL 2020 will be the first in our new rhythm or conference organization (twice every three years, on years ACL main conference is not in Europe). The board is negotiating with potential organizers about dates and locations and we expect final bids soon. Deadline for final bids is March 15, 2018. The preferred date for the conference currently is March 30 until April 5, 2020.

Notes

- Figures for Valencia reflect only what was paid from our a/c, not the full conference account. If an overall surplus or deficit was registered, it has yet to be transferred to our account.

- EACL expecting to receive a large surplus from the Berlin conference but again it has not been transferred to the European account.

EACL Sponsorship

  • EACL will fund up to 15 students with a grant of up to 550 euros for ESSLLI 2018.

EACL Plans

  • Reorganization of the website. The student board of EACL, with help from the EACL board, is currently working on a new version of the EACL website which will be more modern, better updated, and better integrated with social media.
  • Better outreach to the Middle East and Africa, and organization of more, low-cost, activities for European PhD students remains high on the agenda, in the first instance by facilitating their presence at current summer schools and conferences (financially and otherwise); the student board has been asked to structurally attend EACL board meetings and give input on these issues.

EACL Board

  • The EACL board elected two new student board members to replace Florian Kunneman and John Camilleri and join Uxoa Iñurrieta. Fernando Alva Manchego (University of Sheffield, UK) and Michael Schlichtkrull (University of Amsterdam, The Netherlands, also in Edinburgh) were selected after a vote within the board. We thank Florian and John for their enthusiasm and the service they provided, and Fernando and Michael for their willingness to help EACL.
  • The nominating committee nominated Claudia Borg (University of Malta) for the replacement of Mike Rosner as treasurer, which went unopposed by the membership of EACL, and she was duly elected on October 1, 2017. Mike Rosner was asked, and accepted, to stay on the board as past treasurer.
  • The search for researchers to join the conference sponsorship committee for EACL is ongoing.
