2020Q1 Reports: Publicity Director
ACL Publicity Director report by Barbara Plank (IT University of Copenhagen, Denmark) and Sarvnaz Karimi (CSIRO, Australia)
Aim
The aim of the new role is to take the lead on developing a publicity strategy for the ACL, including a social media strategy and publicizing ACL members' research and accomplishments.
Social media streamlining
- Twitter: @aclmeeting is the new permanent Twitter account for ACL conferences and announcements by the organization. Reasons: (1) to avoid creating a new account each year which requires to acquire new followers annually; and (2) transferring of the credentials is now centralized.
- Facebook: An ACL facebook page [1] is created with each ACL conference being added annually as an event.
- LinkedIn: We created a LinkedIn group (https://www.linkedin.com/groups/10484931/) as a moderated group to allow for the members to post news or job advertisements related to the NLP community.
- Instagram: (aclnlp)[2] - Existing Instagram page, collected credentials.
- Strategy for hashtags - We encourage the use of consistent hashtags as below:
* ACL organization annoucements (e.g., elections): #NLProc and #aclnlp (together) * ACL conference hashtag: #acl<year>nlp, e.g., #acl2020nlp * #NLProc for any other NLP-related announcements
Current follower/member status (as of 29-02-2020): Twitter (4,305), Facebook (189), LinkedIn members (201), Instagram (485).
Handbook for Publicity chairs
We are providing an updated handbook to the publicity chairs and PCs that outlines information that may be useful to choose publicity chairs as well as outlets to disseminate the information and an outline of their responsibilities.
Publicize Members' research
Planned work for the coming year: set up a channel to highlight ACL members' research and accomplishments (in collaboration with the Information Officer)
