Johns Hopkins University is again organizing a 6-week summer research workshop in 2017, this time in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University. This workshop carries forward the two-decade-long tradition of the JHU summer workshops, and will be hosted this time by CMU in Pittsburgh. It is our hope that future workshops will be hosted by other locations, returning periodically to JHU.

Social multimedia is fundamentally changing how we communicate, interact, and collaborate in our daily lives. Recent advances in multimedia computing attract an increase in the research on multimedia content analysis, indexing and retrieval based on subjective concepts such as emotion, aesthetics, and preference. Different from the traditional content-based retrieval methods, the affective social media computing aims to process affective content from social multimedia.
